BACK TO THE FUTURE… (THANKS MICHAEL J. FOX)

Firstly, picture the skinniest kid you can think of, give him a Kurt Kobain hair cut, army pants and an oversized black t-shirt. Don’t forget to add in some serious acne that looks like ‘Pizza the Hut’ from the 80′s movie Spaceballs.

    It’s me. It’s 1994.

When I was a teenager I read countless books, listened to Smashing Pumpkins and Nirvana, I’d write songs, play the guitar and sing my heart out. My first love though was writing. Before I could even play a chord on a guitar I’d already filled a pile of notebooks with stories of teenage angst, geekyness and failures at finding a girlfriend. For most of my time at school I was a loner, a wolf pack of one. I didn’t follow trends all that much, I did my own thing. I observed, alot. Everything I saw in the world around me I’d write down in one of those old notebooks.

One day I decided I would try an experiment, something that until then I hadn’t done all that much of. Everyday I would do one thing that scared me. There were no specific rules, just that I had to do this one thing once a day.

The first day I said ‘hello’ to a girl named Summer in my Maths class, she said ‘hi’ back. I walked away smiling like a crazy man. That wasn’t so hard. Next, I tried debating a topic with a teacher in class, I was terrified of speaking in front of others, fear messed with my brain, words jumbled together in strange sentences. I’d basically made a new language. My teacher clearly won the debate, but for me it was like losing the battle and winning the war. Then I asked some musicians whether they’d play in a band with me. They said yes. I couldn’t believe it. Was it really this easy?! That turned into another band and another. That one decision snowballed into countless opportunities, friends, recordings, tours… you get the picture.

I truly believe all of this led me to photography, but its bigger than that. I’ve kind of never stopped trying things that scare me and it’s really only occurred to me that my life began to change when I started that little experiment.

We all have our ‘thing’ that we are here to do, a calling or passion – if you want to know what that is you’ll have to make some choices that will seem kinda whack to others around you. People probably won’t understand because it’s not their thing, it’s yours. It’s going to be scary. It’s going to demand HUGE amounts of your time and sacrifice. Don’t freak out and runaway from it. Don’t shrink back from being you.

As lame as it sounds… If I can do this, you can do ‘this’.

    Yours in radness,
    SS

corey - Dude look at you know your like kid president! How good were the 90s!

Amanda - I was JUST thinking something similar to this the other day…. along the lines of, ‘you gotta just do what you love’. Even if it seems totally stupid and scary. So yeah. I hear you! :)

MEL & COREY. LOVERS SHOOT. GOMA, BRISBANE.

The phone call went something like this… “Hey its Corey, I just saw a bunch of your photos on Tumblr, they’re pretty good man. Like GOOD. Have you thought about doing photography as a job?… (Me) “No, not ever…” (insert super long phone conversation and life changing decisions) (Corey) “… awesome dude, see you in a couple of weeks!”.

I owe Corey and his wife Mel big time for being the people that invited me to stay with them in Melbourne for a week back in 2010. They did so much to inspire me to take my photography seriously, showed me the ropes and how to make it happen.

In 9 years of marriage they’d never had photos taken of them other than at their wedding. When they came to visit recently, I decided it was time to break the photo-drought and do a lovers shoot at the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane.

On a side-note, Corey’s beard is a thing of beauty.

    Martin Fawkes - Adorable.

BRIANNA & ALEX. DIY RAINBOW WEDDING. BRISBANE WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER.

I thought I’d start by sharing the most epic of engagement stories…

Alexander decided for their 5 year anniversary to take Brianna on a treasure hunt that involved a canoe, digging up a treasure chest in the sand, fishing for a message in a bottle and tearing open a toy dinosaur for more hidden clues. Alex even made ‘ye olde’ paper using coffee and tea stains. This guy knows no limits! The treasure hunt ended with a treehouse cabin and Alex waiting for Brianna on one knee surrounded with rose petals spelling out ‘will you marry me’. Brianna cried some very happy tears and Alex slid a plastic grand piano ring on her finger.

With an engagement like that it was always going to be a one of a kind wedding. Almost everything from the dresses, bouquets, invites and decorations were all handmade. Just some of the highlights were Brianna’s amazing handmade wedding dress, the bridal party dancing back down the aisle, Brianna singing Alex a serenade on her keyboard under a big old tree and the countless amount of group hugs I witnessed.

There was a lot of love going round and I’m honoured to be part of what was truly an amazing day.
Thanks to the impeccable Ben Murphy for second shooting with me on the day as well.

Brianna & Alex’s wedding is also featured on the most awesome RockNRoll Bride.

The beautiful song playing is called ’17′ by Brisbane band Adam & Dusty.
